Adoptions of the 2020 NEC

State of Texas adopts the 2020 NEC effective September 1

The Texas Electrical Safety and Licensing Advisory Board unanimously voted to update the mandatory state electrical code to the 2020 edition of the NEC with an effective date of September 1, 2020.

The revised Rule will now be published in the next issue of the Texas Register opening a 30-day public comment period. These comments will be shared with Board at their next meeting on May 27, 2020.

Section 1305.201 of the Texas Electrical Safety and Licensing Act provides municipalities the authority to make local amendments to the 2020 NEC; however, any proposal to amend these standards shall be done in accordance with Section 90.4 of the NEC which stipulates “the authority having jurisdiction may waive specific requirements in this Code or permit alternative methods where it is assured that equivalent objectives can be achieved by establishing and maintaining effective safety.”
