The winter edition of the 2026 IAEI Magazine marks the 50th anniversary of the UL Solutions Question Corner column. The UL Question Corner – now UL Solutions Question Corner – first appeared in the January 1976 edition of the IAEI News. The column originated as an offshoot of the UL governmental inspector meetings held annually at each of the five U.S. IAEI section meetings. The Question Corner created a platform to share answers to general questions posed to UL engineers during those inspector meetings.
The first column addressed voltage ratings on compression-type wiring lugs, short-circuit current ratings on service equipment, and the listing of kits to convert fuse panels to circuit breakers. While technology has advanced dramatically over the past 50 years, the need to understand how technological advancements impact UL Certification (Listing) and compliance with the National Electrical Code® (NEC®) and other installation codes remains unchanged.
UL Solutions has always worked closely with and supported the mission of the IAEI as a partner in safety. Since the inception of the IAEI in 1928, when UL provided office space for the new organization, to our field staff attending local IAEI meetings over the decades, to today’s face-to-face support from the UL Solutions Codes and Regulatory Services team at section, chapter and divisional meetings all over North America, we remain an expert technical resource for the inspection and installation community. UL Solutions is privileged to provide this important service for the last 50 years and is looking forward to another 50 years of delivering the expertise that only UL Solutions can!
